Shelf life is about the form first. Baseline below assumes an opaque airless bottle kept refrigerated after opening. That is the best-case setup. L-ascorbic acid is the exception that needs the cold.

Above room temperature, and especially warm humid places like a bathroom cabinet, degradation accelerates. The fridge keeps LAA serums fresher ~2× longer than a warm shelf.
Higher % vitamin C means more to lose, and it is a race against the clock from the day you open it. Oxidation starts immediately and follows roughly a straight line toward brown.

Usually about 6–8 weeks when refrigerated in an airtight, dark bottle. Higher concentrations, room temperature, clear glass, or repeated air exposure shorten that window; a fridge-stored airless bottle gets you closer to 8 weeks.
Only L-ascorbic acid (and to a lesser degree sodium ascorbate) really benefit from refrigeration, because pure vitamin C degrades fastest. Stable derivatives such as ascorbyl glucoside (AA2G), SAP, MAP and 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid stay effective for months at room temperature in a cool, dark spot.
Fresh L-ascorbic acid serum is clear to very pale yellow. A light-amber tint is the first warning sign that oxidation has begun. Deep yellow-to-brown means the vitamin C has largely oxidized. Discard it.
Once the liquid turns deep yellow or brown, smells off, or is past the bottle’s printed “period after opening” (PAO) date. If it is a self-made L-ascorbic acid serum, replace it after about 6–8 weeks, sooner if stored at room temperature.
Ascorbyl glucoside (AA2G) and 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid are the most stable vitamin C forms. They resist oxidation for up to about 12 months. They convert to ascorbic acid in skin, so they are gentler but less potent per drop than L-ascorbic acid.
It is not toxic, but it has largely lost its antioxidant potency and the oxidized compounds can irritate sensitive skin. When in doubt, discard it and mix a fresh batch.
